WEBGLIMPSE IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MICROSOFT FRONTPAGE!
IF YOU ARE USING FRONTPAGE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE WEBGLIMPSE.

What it is
The WebGlimpse Search Engine is intended to be used by experienced web developers. WebGlimpse adds search capabilities to your WWW site automatically and easily.

Once the search engine has been installed, configured and has indexed your site, it will be available on an web page located within your site. You will need to create links to the web page that WebGlimpse creates.

Installing WebGlimpse
Select the Search Engine icon. If WebGlimpse is not installed on your site yet, the screen displays a message indicating that WebGlimpse is not installed. Click on the Install WebGlimpse button. WebGlimpse will be installed on your site within approximately ten minutes. See below:

The Search Engine Manager
Once you have installed WebGlimpse, the Search Engine Manager allows you to configure how WebGlimpse indexes your site content. In general you only want to index your HTML documents, you do not need to index images, scripts, or program files.

In the Search Engine Manager, select the Directory Administration button. The following screen should appear:

Here is where you can specify what gets indexed and what doesn't. To disallow WebGlimpse from indexing a particular extension (besides what is listed already), add the following command to the large text box pictured above:

Deny \.extension

where '.extension' is the extension for the file type you want to prevent being indexed. You can also eliminate specific directories from being indexed by the search engine by including the following command in the text box:

Deny /directoryname

where 'directoryname' is the name of the directory you want to prevent being indexed.

When all of your changes have been made, click the Save button. This updates the configuration file with the changes you just made.

Re-Indexing Your Site
When you first install WebGlimpse, it creates an initial index of your site. As you make changes to your site, or change the configuration using the Search Engine Manager, you will need to re-index the site so that all the changes are reflected in the index. This will ensure that WebGlimpse returns accurate, up-to-date search results when users perform searches on your site.

From the Search Engine Manager, select the ReIndex Web Pages button. The web pages on your site will automatically be re-indexed and a page of the results from that re-indexing appears.

Removing WebGlimpse

Simply click the "Remove WebGlimpse" button in the Search Engine Manager screen. It will take approximately 10 minutes for the server to process your directive. All index files and WebGlimpse binaries will be removed from your site, but your content will not be altered.

Tips, Tricks, and Warnings

Remember that once WebGlimpse is installed, it will not automatically include new pages in its search. You will need to go into your WebGlimpse manager and reindex your pages (see above).

Using WebGlimpse on Your Site
You can link to the searches one of 2 ways: on a dedicated page, or with embedded code.

Dedicated page
The search page is created at:

http://domainname/wgindex.html

and looks like this:

(which opens to the pre-designed search page).

Embedded
To add search to a custom existing page, open http://domainname/wgindex.html and copy just the 'body' portion of the html code. Paste it into the target page html. You can then customize the page as you see fit around the search function.
Note: The target page must be located in the same directory as the original wgindex.html file.

Some Last Warnings

  • Do not attempt to use with FrontPage
  • Remember to reindex your site if you have installed WebGlimpse after your content was posted.
  • Remember to Deny any files or folders you don't want the world to see!
