Streaming RealAudio and Video files:

You can store your clips anywhere in your domain account under the "www" folder or below. To access the clip and stream it, you must create a ".ram" file which gives the server instructions on where your clip is located and how to stream it. The .ram file is simply a text file with an absolute URL to the clip (you can use NotePad to create it or your File Manager tool in the Control Center). This URL will need to be along the lines of:

http://full.domain.name/directory/filename.rm

The above address goes in the .ram file, not in your HTML code. Your HTML code calls the .ram file. Then the .ram file is used to call up the realmedia clip file. So for example, your HTML code would look something like this:

"<a href="http://musicforyou.com/ra/music.ram">Click here to listen to music.></a>

HTTP streaming versus PNM streaming

We utilize HTTP streaming for our RealMedia clips. This has the following differences from using PNM streaming:

  • Bandwidth negotiation is not possible with HTTP streaming
  • Live broadcast streaming is not supported

What this means for you

Because bandwidth negotiation is not possible, it is wise to encode for the majority of users, or to encode slightly different versions of the same clip for those with different connection speeds. For example, you might upload 2 versions of the same clip - one at 56Kbps for modem users and one at 300Kbps for broadband users.
