This
option in your Control Center allows you to compress directories and/or
files located in your account. Many files become compressed into one
archive file. This is an excellent way to backup your own files. Once
you've compressed your files, you can FTP the archive file to your
hard drive for safe keeping or simply leave it in your account. If
you ever need to restore the compressed files, just return to this
part of your Control Center and select the file that is compressed
and click Extract.
Selecting
files/folders to archive
When you select the Archive Manager tool, you will see a screen with
instructions, and your directory structure. Here you can select individual
files and/or whole folders to add to your archive. For example, to
back up your entire document folder, you could select the 'domain-www'
folder and everything in it and below will be included in the archive
file.
Opening
an archive on your Computer
Since the Linux operating system uses the GZIP compression protocol,
the file will have an extension of filename.tar.gz. Once you copy
the backup archive to your computer, If you are using Linux or Unix,
using the 'tar' command will open the archive. The popular compression/decompression
program WinZip
will open GZIPped archive files on a PC.
