What
is Anonymous FTP?
Anonymous FTP access enables visitors to download or upload files
to your web site as if you were running your own FTP server. The Anonymous
FTP area is completely separate and apart from your web site files
and folders. It does not require a login and therefore enabling this
tool will allow anyone to connect and upload content to your site (in
the special folder).
It is sometimes used to place files for
public download via FTP rather than linked from the website, but this
has become less common as web sites have evolved.
How
do I install Anonymous FTP?
The Anonymous FTP tool is not included in the SimplePlan. You will
first need to add this tool using the "Add Package" tool in your Control
Center.
The fee for Anonymous FTP is $2 per month.
Once you have
purchased the Anonymous FTP option, an icon will appear in your Control
Center labeled "AnonFTP".
When you first access this icon you will see
this message:
"Anonymous
FTP has not been installed for your domain. To install Anonymous
FTP, please click: Install AnonFTP"
Once
you select this option, the system replies with:
"Install
AnonFTP Operation submitted to the server for processing The operation
will be completed within the next 10 minutes "
Once the
server has completed the processing, the special folders will be created
with the root named $domain-anonftp (where $domain is your domain name
without the www or .com) Anonymous FTP will then be enabled. See below
for how users can upload and download.
How
can I remove Anonymous FTP from my domain?
Once
installed, when you click on 'AnonFTP' the screen will display:
"Anonymous FTP is currently
avaliable. If you would like to remove Anonymous FTP, please click:
Remove AnonFTP"
After clicking remove you will see this message:
"Remove AnonFTP Operation submitted to the server for processing
The operation will be completed within the next 10 minutes"
Once the server completes processing the request, the special folders
and any content stored in them will be removed from your account, and
your domain will no longer accept FTP logins without credentials (userid
and password).
Are
there any restrictions on using the Anonymous FTP site?
If you choose to allow uploads to your FTP site, you still bear responsibility
for the content posted to your account, even by others. For example,
if someone were to post material to your domain which is in violation
of our Terms (i.e. pornogrpahy, copyrighted
material, etc.) your account could be suspended or terminated.
How
is Anonymous FTP activity tracked?
All
FTP data transfer is counted against your monthly bandwidth allotment.
Also, all files within the FTP area count against the disk storage
allotment. Keep this in mind when deciding whether Anonymous FTP is
right for your situation.
How do people connect to my FTP site?
Visitors
wishing to access your site via FTP need to use your domain name as
the FTP hostname, a username of 'anonymous' and password 'guest'. When
people connect to your FTP site, they will see the following directories:
/bin/, /dev/, /etc/, /incoming/, /lib/, and /pub/. "/pub/" is where
you should put the files you want to make available for public download.
"/incoming/" is the folder for your users to upload files into - this
is the only folder in your FTP site that can be written to by anonymous
users.
To access the anonymous FTP site from a browser, use the following address:
ftp://yourdomain.com/pub/
